Hillsborough
City GuideHillsborough is the seat of Orange County, NC. The town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with a hundred late 18th and early 19th century structures. It was the scene of several Revolutionary War and Civil War events: The trial and hanging of the Regulators, who staged an uprising to protest taxes, corrupt officials and non representation; the momentous Constitutional Convention of 1788 where North Carolina delegates demanded a Bill of Rights before they would ratify the U.S. Constitution; and the headquarters for Confederate Gen. Johnston, who negotiated his surrender to Union Gen. Sherman, which led to the end of the Civil War. Today, Hillsborough has a population of 5,446 residents (in 2000) and offers history, state parkland and quaint antiques and craft shopping. |
