Oregon
Dunes Travel Planner
Enormous sand dunes were formed nearly 12 million years ago when the
sea that covered most of Oregon began to recede. The sandy sea floor remained
and created what is now Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The area
covers a 40 mile stretch of coast from Florence
to Coos
Bay.
The dunes themselves range from 50 feet to almost 3 mile wide. Depending
on where you go, Oregon Dunes offers many activities. Features of this
NRA include 30 lakes with fishing and swimming, 14 hikiing trails, 11
parking areas for the beach and one overlook.
Stables offer horseback riding on various parts of the beach.
Or the visitor can choose a deserted and enjoy solitude with the only
sounds being wind and surf.
